Clendon House is a two-storey building with steps for entry, however a mobility ramp is available, just let our staff know you require it.
The second floor may not be suitable for those with mobility issues due to the steep and narrow staircase. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access to the second floor.
Please note wheelchair users may find it difficult to move within the house because of the width of the doorframes and the narrow passages.

Highlights

In colonial Aotearoa, James Clendon seemed to be everywhere. A trader, merchant, farmer, government official and US consul, he was also a signatory to He Whakaputanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
But it’s the story of Jane Clendon, of Hokianga Māori and Irish descent, that the handsome kauri dwelling best tells.
After James’ death in 1872, Jane was left with eight children to raise and a mountain of debt. To keep the house, she sold kauri gum, timber, firewood and produce and generally worked her fingers to the bone.
Today, Clendon House and its collection documents 150 years of this remarkable Northland whānau.
